Economic Profile

Although agriculture is one of the key income generators in the area, the relative contribution of agriculture has decreased rapidly in Mafube as is illustrated by the fact that the sector’s contribution to the local economy decreased from 22 % in 1996 to 13.9 % in 2004. Agricultural activities include the production of maize and intensive livestock farming. The area is the seventh-largest producer of red meat in South Africa.

The manufacturing sector contributes to approximately 24 % of the local economy in Mafube and the relative importance of the sector is increasingly acknowledged. Manufacturing is mainly linked to the agricultural economy in and around Frankfort. Sectors in which remarkable proportional gains are reported are trade, transport and community services.
